Nestled between the Orne and Calvados regions, just 40 minutes from Caen and ideally situated between Falaise (17 km) and Argentan (11 km), the Château de Commeaux is a rare jewel steeped in history and architectural splendor.

Dating back to the second quarter of the 16th century (1540–1549), this Monument Historique classified château is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Its design features two wings built at right angles, adorned with two circular towers at the northeast and northwest corners, each crowned with soaring pyramid-shaped roofs. The elegant façades showcase beautiful Renaissance windows and intricate decorative motifs, further enhancing its timeless grandeur. Notably, the château’s western tower once served as a chapel.

The château is rich in historical significance; it is said that King Henry IV lodged here in 1589, likely during the Battle of Gauthiers, where royal troops under the command of the Duke of Montpensier clashed with local peasants.

Over the centuries, the Château de Commeaux has been home to several prominent families. It first belonged to the Loison family, followed by the Droullin lineage, and later, in 1667, it became the residence of Claude de Vigneral de Ri, whose descendants occupied the château until 1819. After a brief tenure with the Guerpel family, the estate returned to the Vigneral de Ri family in 1861. Though significantly damaged in 1944, the château was lovingly restored by Count Jean de Vigneral, and today it remains a cherished private residence.

Set to the east of the village, the château is surrounded by over 9 hectares of stunning grounds, including a landscaped park, a tree-lined avenue, and vast meadows, all traversed by the Houai River, a tributary of the Orne.

The estate is further enriched by a collection of impressive outbuildings. These include a spacious guesthouse, a magnificent grange dîmière with substantial volumes, a charming caretaker’s house, and a large barn located at the edge of the property.

The Château de Commeaux stands as a testament to both history and artistry, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a property of such prestige and exceptional character in the heart of Normandy.
